How to Layer Vintage Denim - Styling Ideas from Harptree Village
A Little English Cleverness… and Quite a Lot of Vintage Denim
Something Has Been Noticed.
It has become something of a quiet talking point in Harptree Village this autumn. Nothing official, of course, just the sort of thing one begins to notice, and then cannot quite stop noticing.
Vintage denim has been appearing again and again on the most well-dressed Kittens, styled in ways that feel entirely effortless, yet somehow very deliberate. Not loud, not overly styled, but always present. And always layered.
A Parisian Moment, Quite Unexpected
Only yesterday, a Kitten was seen wandering through the village in her vintage denim jeans, and it must be said, she wore them exceptionally well.
She had paired her vintage denim with the Harptree Village Bunny Blouse, worn loosely and only partially buttoned, with a soft camisole beneath. The blouse was left untucked, moving gently as she walked, giving the whole look that easy, undone feeling that is so often attempted, and so rarely achieved.
There was something almost Parisian about it. The kind of outfit that suggests she simply dressed and left the house, though one suspects a little more thought had gone into it than that.
Vintage denim has a way of doing this. It makes everything around it feel more relaxed, more wearable, and somehow more chic.
A Closer Look Reveals Everything
Not long after, another ensemble drew attention near the gates, this time centred around the Harptree Village Denim Jumpsuit.
At first glance, it was simple. But a closer look revealed the Harptree Village Blouse layered neatly underneath, with spotty sleeves and a pussybow tied just so at the neckline. It softened the jumpsuit beautifully, adding a touch of romance to an otherwise structured piece.
It was the sort of detail that might be missed if one were not paying attention, and yet it made all the difference.
Later in the day, one could easily imagine the addition of the Harptree Village Bomber Jacket, particularly when styled back with vintage denim on cooler afternoons, as the air shifts and the light begins to soften.
One Cannot Help but Notice the Denim Vest
The Harptree Village Denim Vest, however, has become something of a favourite among those who enjoy a slightly more styled approach.
One particularly memorable outfit featured the vest layered over the Harptree Village Blouse with Singlet, the blouse tucked neatly into the Full Skirt. The result was a beautifully balanced silhouette, soft through the skirt, with just enough structure through the bodice.
On another occasion, the same vest was paired with vintage denim jeans for a double vintage denim moment that could have felt heavy, but did not.
Quite the opposite.
The softness of the blouse, the fit of the vintage denim, and the confidence of the styling brought everything together in a way that felt thoughtful, feminine, and unmistakably chic.
As the Day Turns Cool
As the afternoon slips into evening, one begins to notice the final layers making their appearance.
The Harptree Village Bomber Jacket is often the first. Thrown over vintage denim, over blouses, over whatever the day has called for so far, it adds a touch of practicality without disturbing the outfit beneath. There is something rather appealing about that contrast, with softness underneath and something more relaxed layered on top.
On days that call for a little more polish, the Harptree Village Crop Jacket makes its appearance. Worn over vintage denim, it defines the waist and gives the entire look a more considered finish, as though the wearer had somewhere rather lovely to be.
Then there are the Harptree Village Follies Cardigans, always nearby and always welcome. Layered over vintage denim, they soften everything instantly and bring that gentle autumn warmth that Harptree does so well. Each layer serves its purpose, but none take attention away from the foundation.
And So, One Begins to Understand...
And that, perhaps, is the real story here.
In Harptree Village this autumn, it is not simply about layering for the sake of it. It is about building an outfit around vintage denim and allowing everything else to fall into place.
A blouse softens the vintage denim. A vest shapes it. A cardigan warms it. A jacket completes it.
Each layer adds something, but never competes.
Because at the centre of it all, quietly and confidently, sits the vintage denim.
Exactly where it belongs.

Harptree Village Denim Vest, Size 6:
Such a lovely fit and very true to size!
I am completely smitten with the belt detail across all the denim pieces. It pulls the waist in so beautifully and gives you that sculpted, feminine shape without feeling tight. This vest is one of those pieces that instantly makes you stand a little taller and admire yourself in the mirror for a moment.
Harptree Denim Jean, Size 6:
Oh my goodness… these are so soft and comfortable. A proper wow moment!
They were just slightly on the looser side for me, but honestly, that just means there is room for a big lunch or dinner, which feels like a win. They are also a little lighter and thinner than our usual denim, which makes them feel so easy to wear. You could happily spend the whole day in these.
Harptree Denim Jumpsuit, Size 8:
I sized up to an 8 in this one for a bit of extra comfort through the torso, and I would definitely recommend that if you are taller, around 170 cm or above.
The belt pulls everything in at the waist, so even with the size up it still feels really flattering and nicely fitted.
This piece is such a dream to style! You can layer a blouse underneath on cooler days, or wear it on its own when it’s warm. It works for so many occasions, which I love. And the length is fantastic… but truly, the flared bottoms are the moment. I am completely in love with them.
All other designs worn were Size 6 or Extra Small, for a perfect fit!

Harptree Village Denim Vest, Size 8:
Stretchy, comfortable, and beautifully cinched.
I love this paired back with the denim jeans to create my own little “denim jumpsuit” moment. It just works. And the layering options underneath are endless, which makes it such a fun piece to play with. This is one you’ll keep reaching for.
Harptree Village Denim Jeans, Size 10:
The 10 fit perfectly, which is my usual size in denim. Now, I did have to do the classic little wiggle and jump to get them up over the hips… but once they were there, oh, they were perfect. You know the move!
They’re not quite as high-waisted as the Boston or Vegas jeans I’m used to, but I really loved the fit.
And that deep vintage hem… I was completely sold!
Harptree Village Bomber Jacket - Size 6:
What a jacket! I do love a hood… and a faux-fur trimmed hood? Even better. This is going to work so beautifully with denim, but honestly, with so much of the wardrobe.
I found the size 8 quite roomy, which would be perfect if you’re layering up for cooler weather. I ended up sizing down to a 6 for a neater fit, and it sat just right.
Minnesota Denim Jeans, Size 10:
Ahh, the stretch we know and love. These feel instantly familiar in the best way. Comfortable, flattering, and easy from the moment you put them on. And I do adore a zip feature, so that was a little win for me.
A true Kitten denim staple.
All other designs worn were Size 8 or Small, for a perfect fit!

'Harptree Village' Denim Jumpsuit, Size 12:
I went up to a size 12 in this one to get a little extra length through the torso, and I’m so glad I did.
It’s got that beautiful stretch we all love, so it just hugs in all the right places without ever feeling tight. You know when something fits and you don’t have to fuss with it all day? This is exactly that.
Such an easy, feel-good piece.
‘Minnesota’ Denim Jeans, Size 10:
Oh these are lovely.
A gorgeous high-waisted fit that really holds you in and gives that smooth, flattering shape through the waist and hips. And the stretch… so comfortable.
These are the kind of jeans you reach for when you want to feel put together, but still be able to move, sit, and actually enjoy your day.
'Harptree Village' Denim Vest, Size 10:
Such a great cut in this one.
It sits beautifully through the waist and has that same lovely stretch, so it feels fitted without being restrictive. Everything just falls into place nicely.
Paired back with the denim, it creates such a polished, pulled-together look. One of those pieces you put on and immediately think, “yes, this works.”
All other designs shown are size 10 or Small, for the perfect fit throughout!

‘Harptree Village’ Denim Vest, Size 6:
True to size… and oh, this one knows exactly what it’s doing! The way it pulls in at the waist with the belt is just chef’s kiss. Proper vintage shaping, very cinched, very flattering. You put it on and suddenly everything feels a little more “done”.
This is the kind of piece you end up building outfits around.
'Harptree Village' Bomber Jacket, Size 6:
True to size and such an easy throw-on piece.
It softens the whole look just enough and gives it that slightly relaxed, off-duty feel. You know when you pop something on and suddenly the outfit feels a bit more effortless? This is that layer.
'Harptree Village' Denim Jean, Size 6:
Okay, quick note on these… they do feel a little different when you first pull them on.
They’ve got more of that classic, vintage denim feel. A bit firmer, a little less give at first. But once they’re on? They sit beautifully and give such a lovely shape through the waist and hips.
If you’re used to our stretch denim, you’ll notice the difference straight away… but don’t let that scare you off. These are absolutely worth trying!
Harptree Village Denim Jumpsuit, Size 8:
Now this one… completely different story.
I went up to a size 8 and it was perfect. And unlike the jeans, this has that lovely stretch we all know and love, so it feels so comfortable the second you put it on. The belt pulls the waist in beautifully, so even with the size up, it still feels really shaped.
Honestly, if you try the jeans and think “oh, that’s a bit firmer than I expected”, try the jumpsuit next. It’s a completely different feel, and such an easy one to fall in love with.

Harptree Village Denim Vest, Size 12:
Oh this one is deliciously stretchy. I absolutely could have slipped into a 10, but I chose the 12 so I could layer underneath without a fuss, and I’m very glad I did.
And can we have a moment for the bust fit? No pulling, no flattening, no awkward button strain. A dream. (For reference, I’m a GG cup. You’re welcome 😄)
What I adore most is the versatility. Swap out the denim belt for a pop of colour and suddenly you have a whole new look. I paired mine over the Harptree Village Wiggle Dress (also a 12), and between the crisp blue collar, that lovely red piping, and a matching belt, I felt ready for a stroll through the fairgrounds with a toffee apple in hand.
Harptree Denim Jean, Size 10:
Now, these are a slightly firmer fit than our usual denim, but in the best way. They have structure, they hold you in beautifully, and they feel wonderfully secure.
I sit between a 10 and 12 in jeans, and I chose the 10 for a more fitted look. If you prefer a little extra room, especially for long days or sitting, I would suggest going up a size.
The real charm? Those lovely pockets. They line up perfectly with the vest for the sweetest matching set moment.
Underneath, I wore the navy Harptree Village blouse with a little singlet. The tone blends so nicely with the denim wash. I did find the blouse ran a touch generous, so I sized down to a 10, and it sat just right.
Harptree Denim Jumpsuit, Size 12:
Alright, brace yourself. This is the one.
Truly, hand on heart, my holy grail. The stretch is just as divine as the vest, and it is so comfortable I did not want to take it off.
Now, I’m a taller kitten at 173 cm, and jumpsuits can be a gamble, but this one just works. No pulling, no riding up, no awkward tugging through the torso.
Let’s just say this one did not make it back to the rack!
